  1. Please write a simplified form of WeSay for mobiles/tablets.

This would allow the many who have mobile phones but no computers to input data to a central repository, (computer or cloud based). Difficulty in many areas where we work is high cost of mobile data, so transfer of large files unlikely. SMS or texting and FB messager are not usually charged at the same rate. Phone networks are often fine but internet is usually very patchy - i.e. a way to transfer updates via phone network would be helpful.

      • send receive

Real-time synchronization over ad-hoc wifi network.

I just saw someone trying to explain at a simple level how to use a USB drive to send/receive between 3 users so that all users have the same content. This would be very difficult for a rice farmer to understand. Why not make it automatic, so whenever two laptops are near each other, they automatically sync?

        • Create a picture-based prompt by making a new data gathering page, linking the Art of Reading pictures to a word field entry.

Create a picture-based prompt by making a new data gathering page linking the Art of Reading pictures to a word field. Instead of responding to an English or French word, users would be responding to a picture. The pictures could perhaps be ordered by semantic domain (or simply as they are in the book). This would give a less culturally influenced means for collecting words and could lead to the straightforward production of a picture dictionary.

          • Create a folder system for words

I enjoy using WeSay, but sometimes it's a bit hard to keep track of certain words or phrases. It would be very useful if there was some sort of folder system for words to organize and easily find.
And no, I don't mean the Semantic Domain (which I do find useful).

For example, let's say I have words that relate to a holiday. It would be extraordinarily helpful to be able to make a folder with words associated to that holiday: Christmas -> presents, Santa Claus, cross, etc.

Basically customization files/folders with notes or descriptions that relate to the topic.

            • Localize the config tool at least into major languages (e.g. french and spanish)

Currently the WeSay config is only available in english. It would be great if it was available in other major languages.

                • Add the MLE 4000 word list (in the same way that CAWL list was added)

The MLE 4000 word list was established as a an easy way to add at least 4000 vernacular words The word list consists of glosses in English and French, part of speech, and semantic domains. Using this information a user could just add the vernacular words to the list. Thereby the user can build their lexicon quickly to at least 4000 words.

                    • Please remove the .WeSayConfig file from the batch of items being updated in the send\receive

When you have multiple users working on the same project and they perform a send\recieve, the second user ends up with the .WeSayConfig file of the first user. This is problematic in that the second user will now be seeing the fields that the project administrator intended for first user and not the fields that project administrator had intended for the second.

                      • Please make completing user interface translations a priority.

Given that WeSay is targeted for use by indigenous colleagued, I'm very surprised by how much of the interface is left in English even when switching it to another supported language like Spanish. I think it would be better not to claim support for a given language if so much of the interface is left untranslated that several basic tasks can't be accomplished without the aid of an English speaker. I tried editing the provided .po file, which helped some. But even after doing so, many of the new translations didn't seem to be used by the program.

                        • Export WeSay data for use as custom dictionary in MS Word

It would be great if the WeSay program could have an option to export as a custom dictionary for Word. This would be very helpful to check for proper spelling when writing in the vernacular language.

                          • When entering a new word, check to make sure that it already hasn't been added.

It would be nice if WeSay could check to see if the word being entered has already been entered into the database. This would help prevent duplicates.

It is very important to be able to add in cultural information e.g. if something isn't know in the English-speaking world. For example, the phrase atam öýi, meaning 'my father's house' is only used by: a bride who has left home to live with her in-laws. Or 'Turkmen don't show the baby to others for forty days. The baby is kept at home. Before the baby goes out someone names the baby by saying
'your name is ....' 3 times.' This kind of information may be best added by one of the end users of the dictionary, rather than a…

This would be useful when correcting mistakes made by other team members, or when the default handling of a s/r conflict wasn't ideal.

Providing checkboxes and a "select all" at the level of a given s/r operation could basically provide a way to revert the whole project back, for everyone. (I think the alternative right now would be to extract a snapshot from the repository, save it to a new languagedepot project--with no history--and point everyone to that.)

                                    • Make the full semantic domain title visible (not cut off)

Only the first part of longer semantic domain titles are readable. Changing any of the following would help:
                                      - Make the combo box grow as the window is enlarged.
                                      - Use a thinner, variable-width font (fixed-space shouldn't be necessary for alignment here).
                                      - Show a tool tip when hovering over a title in the combo box.
                                      - Once selected, show the domain title along with the other fields shown below the combo box.

Changing any of these would help, but only changing one of the last two would guarantee legibility for a title of arbitrary length.

                                      • Export dictionary as an interactive website

This would open the opportunity for those who don't have personal computers (i.e. most of the language community in under-developed regions) on which to install WeSay to view and - if possible - comment on dictionary entries. People could log on from internet cafes or their mobile phones and read individual words. They could then offer dialect variations, sample sentences, or other suggestions as comments, perhaps using a blog-posting-like interface. This web-feedback could then be monitored by the project manager and selectively integrated (manually) into the project itself.

For the past few years, SIL has been working on a web site which will be named “LanguageForge”. LF will allow many of the same functions as WeSay, using web browsers. If someone is using wesay, they will be able to “Send/Receive” to synchronize their WeSay version of the dictionary with what is available on LanguageForge. I’ll try to update this suggestion as this site goes live.

                                        • Allow filtering of HTML/ODF output (for topical mini dictionaries)

It would be great to have an easy way to select a Semantic Domain, or keywords or use some other way to select a group of entries to produce a quick PDF printout to motivate communities and encourage people with tangible output even before the whole big dictionary is produced.
